(Dhaka) Amnesty International today concluded its high level mission to Bangladesh. The delegation, led by Secretary General, Irene Khan, met with a wide range of civil society groups and leaders, took testimony from survivors and victims of human rights violations. It visited Rajshahi and Tangail. The delegation met the Chief Advisor, Dr Fakhruddin Ahmedf, the Adviser for Foreign Affairs, Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, and the Chief of Army Staff, General Mueen Ahmed. The delegation also met with leaders of the main political parties.

Amnesty International is launching its new Bangla website www.amnesty.org/bangla today, enabling Bangla speakers to join Amnesty International’s global community of 2.2 million activists in over 100 countries.
The launch of this new website coincides with Amnesty International’s high level mission to Bangladesh led by the Secretary General, Irene Khan, during which the delegates met with journalists, bloggers and activists to discuss the state of freedom of expression in the country.

Amnesty International, Drik News and Drishtipat are hosting a seminar on freedom of expression in Dhaka on January 9th at 6 pm.
Amnesty International Secretary General, Irene Khan, will talk to young journalists, bloggers and activists about the state of freedom of expression in Bangladesh. The meeting will also discuss the important role that the media can play in protecting citizen rights and steps that can be proposed to the Caretaker Government to ensure a free space for human rights defenders and journalists.

Amnesty International met with a leading NGO in Bangladesh to explore how the poor are organizing themselves to overcome poverty, gender inequality and illiteracy.

Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Khan told civil society in Dhaka today that the human rights violations carried out during the Liberation War of 1971 must be investigated.
Ms Khan urged the Caretaker Government to approach the United Nations to request assistance in following processes of international law and in setting up an inquiry. She added that the government could be assured of independent, impartial advice based on the experience of the thirty three commissions already established elsewhere around the world.
